Darwin Street Art Festival

The Darwin Street Art Festival (DSAF) is one of the longest running street art festivals in Australia and takes place every May/June over three weeks. The program includes events, activations, and workshops, along with seeing up to 20 new murals added to Darwin's streets and laneways every year! As of 2024 DSAF boasts 129 large-scale murals painted by some of the most well-known and accomplished street artists in Australia and the world.

DSAF25 will run from 24 May - 15 June.

All artists who submitted an EOI for DSAF25 will receive a response by 21 Feb 2025

On the weekend, we were stoked to announce the recipient of our EXIT ART partnership, a collab with MAGNT to elevate emerging local artists!

BIG Congrats to the talented Sophie Kerr from Palmerston College, who has won the chance to make her mark on the walls of Darwin in this year’s DSAF2025.

CELEBRATING EMERGING LOCAL ARTISTS 🔥 This year we’re excited to be partnering with @mag_nt to commission an ‘Exit Art’ finalist, from works created by year 12’s from across the NT!! One lucky artist will have the opportunity to transfer their design to a mural or a pop-up wall for the 2025 festival.

You too can check out all the incredible art we will be selecting from at the Exit Art Exhibition - an initiative by MAGNT and the NT Department of Education.

DSAF is all about getting creative - obviously we love a good wall, but we’ve also done car parks, fences, and last year we even did our first laneway - so we love outside the box ideas too!! 👀
All we ask is that the wall is public facing and easily accessible, both for the artists and for people to be able to see the art! 🎨

DSAF GOES GLOBAL 🇺🇸🌎 Since 2017, the Darwin Street Art Festival has grown both geographically and reputationally - you can barely turn a corner in Darwin now without seeing art. This month, we took it INTERNATIONAL (!!) through an epic collab with @ntaustralia and @tripadvisor, to bring the heart of the Territory to the streets of LA 🙌

Two icons of the DSAF, Larrakia artists Jason Lee and Trent Bundirrik Lee, travelled to LA with part of the @proper_creative team to put the NT on show on Abbot Kinney Boulevard, in collaboration with LA based artist Yanoe! As part of our DSAF cultural exchange program, we can’t wait to return the favour and welcome @oh_yanoe to the streets of Darwin next year 🔥

BIG big thanks to Trip Advisor and Tourism NT for believing in the power of the art and growing it with us ❤️ What a ride!

How cool is this one! We love to see it, the collab of two legendary artists: @heesco & @bidjipidji_art

The Rainbow Serpent is one of the most significant and dominant figures in Australian Indigenous culture. Often depicted as a colourful snake, the Rainbow Serpent is a spiritual entity that represents the unity of all life and the importance of living in harmony and connection with nature. The shedding skin elements at the front half of the snake represent renewal, a fresh start and progress.

Jason and Heesco came together and integrated their styles into one cohesive mural, with epic results. Amazing!

A brilliantly colouful addition to our CBD Street Art precinct this year, this artwork was completed as part of our cultural exchange program with the @tangistreetartfest and in collaboration with @darwincommunityarts 🤝

The wall by @pansaka_, @dwymabim, and @zolalongor for the Darwin x Bali neighborhood collaboration is titled “real connection” - a response to the 2024 Tangi Street Art festival’s theme in Bali - and it works to bridge a connection between Balinese culture and pattern with Darwin’s community in the city and suburbs.

While here, the crew also gave an artist talk about the Street Art scene in Bali… and I think we’re all going to their festival now 😎😎😎

“My work often looks at what it means to ‘take up space’. Even though we know power imbalances exist, changing this dynamic is still challenging. I used Darwin’s natural elements—lightning storms, waterways, fires, and fertile soil—as metaphors for power, resilience, and the First Nations people of the area. At the centre of my piece, a feminine figure holds the viewer’s gaze, grounded in her power. The abstract dandelions represent immigrant communities, hinting at the complexities of belonging and exclusion.”

DSAF24 POP-UP WALLS 🤩
As part of the Darwin Street Art Festival’s commitment to platforming emerging artists, we have a yearly program of Pop-Up walls that appear for the duration of the festival in high traffic areas that you may not usually see street art.

This year we saw amazing art popping up at @officialbassinthegrass to open the festival - then these amazing works at @casuarinasquare, the @darwinbotanicgardens, the @darwin.waterfront, and some digital designs in various shop windows in the Mall - biggest thankyou to all for supporting the growth of artists in the NT 🫶

FINISHED MURAL: THE NT MUSIC WALL 🎸💥
21 NT ALBUM COVERS!

This one was an epic 10 day project by Jack Hodges aka @dowatfeelsgood, featuring @rhenzfloress, @artbyshaun_dev and @tayla.art.

“I am inspired to create art that resonates with the local community, inviting their contributions and insights to make it relevant to the local area - and it’s important to me that others feel part of the process”

“All the artists involved have been very thankful and supportive which has made the project all the more meaningful. I hope people take the time to listen to local music and show support to the scene. Music plays such an important role in people’s lives, but being a musician can be a hard gig financially so I hope it encourages people to go to the local record store (looking at you @airraidrecords) and show some love.”

The artists were chosen by having conversations with different people in Top End involved in the music industry, or just keen listeners. Jack contacted the artists or managers to get permission, and it was important to him to showcase a mixture of genres, genders and cultures.

‘Progression’ by @george_rose

“Drawing on a diverse array of botanical references, this new work merges the unique flowers of the Stylidiaceae family—native to the Northern Territory—with collected imagery from George’s travels. A refreshed palette, incorporating highlight colours from nearby previous artworks, brings a sense of evolution while maintaining a connection to the past. This work blends ideas of the new and old, touching on a universally shared theme: exploring the continuum of time—past, present, and future—through the universal language of flora.”

This one was so FUN to see the guests get excited every time they came out and saw the new colours and then the intricate detail George had added to this INCREDIBLE mural - Thankyou for having George on your walls for a second time @argusaccommodation ❤️ If you’re choosing a hotel in Darwin, we’re sure this just made it a much easier decision 😍😍

Our first 3D mural 😱
@shaymixinmatoasties created this incredible sculpture as part of her pop-up wall at the @darwin.waterfront this year - inspired by a previous artwork, and made with 4 different 3D printers 🖨️😮

“The art work is about how we can’t turn a blind eye, because it’ll show up in our subconscious. The painted part is the subconscious.”

‘Sleeping River’ by @creaturecreaturestudios

“As the year of the Dragon is upon us, we wanted to depict this indomitable and iconic creature. Being a recognizable symbol in both Eastern and Western folklore, its presence is powerful in bridging these two cultures and reflecting the diversity of its environment here in multi-cultural Darwin.
With Darwin’s history with the Chinese community and Chanel’s own heritage, we took inspiration from the Chinese Dragon or Loong, a living force that moves bodies of water.
Among other water animals, there have been suggestions that the mythical Dragon was inspired by a Chinese alligator so we took inspiration from Northern Territory Crocodiles, in the way it surfaces on the water, looking ancient, stoic, immortal.
The scene features other water life that are both auspicious in Asian symbolism and a reflection of the biodiversity of the area. It aims to reflect the interconnectedness of all things and invoke a meditation within nature.”

One of the best spots to paint under the beautiful shaded trees - and maybe one of the hardest ones to photograph all this detail in full 🙈 Which means you’ll have to go and see this stunning work for yourself!!
