CINDY MAY

'Watermelon Wave' - DARWIN WATERFRONT

THE ARTIST

Cindy May is a colourful artist who finds inspiration from personal experiences, word play and Children's literature.

She likes to playfully push the boundaries with reality and share the joy of having a different perspective on everyday things such as watermelons.

She specialises in drawing and illustrating therefore, The Darwin Street Art Festival was a great opportunity to enlarge her designs and also develop her artistic talent. She looks forward to bringing to life more large-scale versions of her rather small artworks.

THE ARTWORK

‘The Great Wave of Melon’ is a playful take on a compound word and tasty fruit; the watermelon. Inspired by Hokusai’s ‘Under the Wave off Kanagawa’, a Japanese woodblock print which also cleverly plays with perspective. This bright design is appropriate for a Darwin wall as our amazing city is coastal and tropical. This fruity and fun artwork is as tasty as the lime and honey smoothie that Territorians love to get on the weekend from the market.
