Like many a good idea, OFF CUTS art exhibition was the lovechild of a mistake and a lemonade making attitude
Every year Don Whyte Framing host the Off Cuts Show which, as the name suggests, is a show created from the offcut canvas and stretcher bars from the previous year. These mini canvases are distributed to local artists with proceeds from the sale of works being donated to charity.
"One day we made a big mistake – the boys cut a whole lot of stuff for a really big job. I came in and said “What are they?” and they said “Oh, that is for so-and-so” and I said “They are the wrong size!” and the boys went all sheepish and said “Oh, shit!” and then they went back and checked and we ended up with all these 200mm long offcuts – hundreds of them."

In 2025 Don Whyte Framing will team up with the Darwin Street Art Festival and Qubit Gallery once again to co-host Off Cuts and we expect another huge exhibition of work from some of the most prolific artists in the Top End. This community exhibition is an excellent opportunity for people to nab a piece of work from some big names at a fraction of the usual price, and is also a great chance for any creator to have their work exhibited.
Exhibition Opening: Friday 23 May - Qubit Gallery, Harriet Place, Darwin City
Exhibition runs from 24 May - 8 June. Gallery open Thurs - Sun, 10am - 3pm.
