George Goodnow

George Goodnow (they/them) is a painter and muralist currently based in Wollongong (on Dharawal Country), whose work focuses on relationships between people and built environments. They are interested in how objects hold memories, and how architecture reflects, orientates and holds bodies. Their paintings document and deconstruct architecture, materials and memories to explore the complex relationships between built environments, the bodily and the emotional. Through this work, they examine social norms and communicate queer experiences.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

'Fruits' celebrates the significance of small acts of love and care within our day-to-day lives, and the many shapes love takes. Painted onto a long, tiled wall at the Nightcliff shops, the mural transforms the colour and shape of the existing tiles to create a series of windows into intimate still life scenes. Inside the windows, there are mandarins, mandarin peels and a shopping bag. A heart peeled into an orange. Bananas, banana peels and a shopping list on a notepad with a heart inscribed into the page. Small love letters to the Top End, written into objects and activities connected to the local shops and market.
